Odd question, but people have reported getting results with this. Savestate shouldn't be the problem (especially since the in-game time is low if you're talking beginning of the game), but why don't you just make a memory card save on the world map there, since it's battles on the map that you're talking about? If you really wanna try an older version (which probably won't help), don't bother trying v1.6 or older without patching the game (v1.7 was the first to read subcode data, which is needed to play FFVIII without a patch). Oh, updating your graphics drivers won't be necessary (and might even cause more general problems while solving nothing). I guess it should be mentioned that a similar problem has been repeatedly reported (and confirmed by me) for the NTSC-U version of the game, so seeing a variation of it happen on the PAL version is not unreasonable. When nearing the left-most end of the bridge in Dollet, the screen will very quickly cut back and forth between the regular view and a reversed image of it. Unfortunately, since these are all one-time-only videos, I haven't had the opportunity to see if it's always these particular ones that cause the problem. This has happened during the first assault on Dollet, during the shot of the robot's foot crushing the car, and during the Galbadia Garden intro video. The music will continue, but the audio tied to the video itself will either be totally silent or replaced by soft clicking. Seemingly at random, an FMV will have no sound when it plays. Boss battle transition effect ends with the black border at the bottom of the screen flickering between black and white during the battle. On regular (pre-rendered) screens, it is mostly fine, but there are occasionally black glitches around the feet of the characters. Battle transition effect simply doesn't work when on the overworld. However, there have been some annoying issues that I can't seem to get rid of:
